Why Automate (and Why I Call It Wizardry)

Why Automate (and Why I Call It Wizardry)

When I first started automating my own work, it wasn’t about saving time.

It was about something simpler: it felt like magic.

I’d click a button or say a command,

and suddenly files moved, notes synced, emails sent, tasks appeared—

all without me lifting another finger.

It was as if I’d whispered an incantation and the world moved on its own.

That’s still why I do this.

Automation isn’t just efficiency.

It’s techno-magic—real-world spells you design yourself.

From Incantations to Automation Wizard

Some of you have been here since this newsletter was called Incantations.

That name came from this exact feeling:

I’m performing incantations to create spells.

The new name, Automation Wizard, makes it clearer what this newsletter is about—

but the magic hasn’t gone anywhere.

If anything, it’s stronger.

The Deeper Why

Here’s what automation does for me:

  • It frees my time.
  • It reduces mistakes.
  • It lets me focus on the creative, human parts of work.
  • And honestly? It’s just cool.

There’s a thrill in seeing your systems come alive—

watching something you built move like it has its own mind.

That thrill is what gets me out of bed to build new workflows.

That’s the energy behind this newsletter.

What Automation Really Means

People talk about automation like it’s a race to do more in less time.

But time isn’t something you can “save.”

You can only spend it better.

That’s why I automate—

not to chase efficiency, but to win back my most finite resource: time.

Automation isn’t about doing less work—it’s about doing less repetition.

It’s about clearing space for the things that actually need you.

Every minute you waste fixing something a system could have handled

is a minute you’ll never get back.

Automation gives those minutes a second life.

Why I Created Automation Wizard

I wanted a place to explore that kind of magic—

where automation and AI meet in service of better living, not busier working.

This newsletter is about building systems that think with you,

combining practical workflows (n8n, Zapier, Make, IFTTT, Claude, ChatGPT)

with a mindset that values clarity over complexity.

Some issues will be philosophical.

Some will be hands-on.

All will be about turning technology into wizardry you can actually use.

The Real Reason to Automate

We don’t automate just to do more.

We automate to make life lighter—

to free our attention for the parts of life no machine can replace.

And yes—because it’s just plain cool to see our “spells” come alive.

Welcome to Automation Wizard.

Let’s build some magic together.

I help creators and small teams design automation systems that make their operations flow—so they can spend more time creating and less time managing.
If you’d like help building or improving your setup, you can book a short discovery chat.
It’s informal—just a chance to look at what’s slowing you down and explore ways automation or AI could make your business run smoother.

For years I’ve been fascinated by typing speed. I’ve used every shortcut, text replacement, and expansion trick imaginable to squeeze a few more words per minute out of my fingers. But at some point, I realised that no matter how fast I type, I can’t type as fast as I can think. Recently, I’ve been using Wispr Flow on both my Mac and iPhone, and it’s quietly changed how I capture ideas. Instead of forcing thoughts through my keyboard, I just… talk. It’s brilliant for rough ideas, notes to...

Hey there, I want to make progress but I feel like I'm getting in my own way a lot, the following is going to seem like a lot of procrastinating and in a way it is. I think the difference this time is that I'm sharing it all and I can see the value longer term and that's what I'm thinking of now, things that will sustain and help me longer term, especially with income and security. Building My AI Council Been experimenting with something slightly unhinged this week — planning to create AI...

Hi Reader, So here we are — first proper newsletter back, and I'm already breaking my own rules by writing this the day before posting with an emptied cappuccino. Some things never change. But here's what has changed: I'm finally practicing what I've been preaching. 🤖 Automation Wizard (Coming Soon) I've spent the last few weeks setting up my automation consultancy properly. Not just the business side, but actually using every tool I recommend to clients. I'll be really leaning into an...
